A strategy is a high level plan to achieve goals and desirable ends with available means. Strategic planning is the process of establishing a strategic plan, defining goals, ends and objectives and allocating resources and responsibilities. It is also used to clarify the overall purpose of a national program, to define the desired results of that program’s activities and to explain how those results will be achieved.
Following the request made by the Arab national mine action authorities (NMAAs) during the 5th ARCP annual conference in October 2016 in Lebanon, the GICHD, with the partnership of LMAC through the Arab Regional Cooperation Programme will conduct a workshop on ‘’Strategic Planning for the National Mine Action Programmes’’. This workshop is co-organised with the Executive Secretariat for the Demining and Development of the North West Coast-Egypt. It is funded and supported by the Arab fund for Economic and Social Development and Switzerland
Using the principles outlined in the GICHD Guide to Strategic Planning, the workshop will provide an introduction to planning at the strategic level, including some of the tools that can be used to create or define goals and objectives in line with best practices.
The overall objective of this workshop is to enable NMAAs in the Arab programmes to plan, develop and conduct an effective strategy which achieves the goals of their mine action programmes. After attending this workshop, participants will have a good understanding of the principles and tools required for effective strategic planning, including the development of a multi-year strategic plan.
The workshop will be comprised of lectures and presentations by the LMAC facilitators and some country representatives, as well as group work between participants.
On the first day, the LMAC will present on the strategic planning cycle and key principles, as well as the context analysis that will help identify goals, objective and target setting.
The second day will be focus on developing a strategic plan, identifying Strategic risks, and agreeing on the plan and how to implement it efficiently. The rest of the day will focus on the functions of results-based management and quality management within strategic plan, as well as monitoring, evaluating, reviewing and updating the strategic plan.
The third day will focus on good practices, how to conduct SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) in strategic planning systems. This will be followed by a session on developing action plans, where each participating organisation will present on its next steps/proposed action plan. Some ARCP programmes will be invited to discuss their strategic planning and the challenges they face in implementation.
The workshop will be held in Arabic.
This workshop is intended for applicants from the national mine action programmes of the Arab Regional Cooperation Programme (Strategic planning personnel who are in charge from the programme itself).
