ARCP Non-Technical Survey Course – Middle East Region
The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) and the Lebanon Mine Action Center (LMAC), in the context of the Arab Regional Cooperation Programme (ARCP), are organising a Regional NTS in Mine Action Training, that will take place from 25 March to 6 April in Lebanon. The workshop will be held in both Arabic and English.
Non-Technical Survey (NTS) is the most critical step within the land release process. The purpose of NTS is to gather evidence of contamination so that subsequent technical survey and/or clearance assets can more effectively and efficiently reduce and clear land. Poor NTS is usually overly conservative, resulting in the generation of excessively large Suspected Hazardous Areas. Quality NTS is the foundation for successful land release operations. This course is designed to equip students with the ability to identify, gather, record and verify evidence of contamination. The course will have a specific focus on conducting NTS in environments contaminated with IEDs.

00Objective
The ARCP brings together National Mine Action Programmes, and other relevant stakeholders in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The objective of this course is to provide field staff and supervisors with the necessary skills to successfully carry out effective NTS operations in the Middle East. The following topics will be covered:
- Introduction to Land Release and Non-Technical Survey
- Basic Recognition of Explosive Hazards - UXO, landmines, sub-munitions and IED components.
- Sketch mapping
- NTS Tools - GPS, Laser Range Finder, compass, basecamp and google earth
- Technology in Non-Technical Survey
- Information Management
- Ground Sign Awareness
- Communicating in NTS – Gender and Diversity, Interview and Negotiate

Student Arrival into Beirut Airport: Sunday 24 March 2019
First Day of Training: Monday 25 March 2019
Day Trip or Day Off: Sunday 31 March 2019
Last Day of Training and end of course dinner: Friday 5 April 2019
Departure: Saturday 6 April 2019
00Participants
The course is aimed at students who are field staff, or manage field staff within an operator organization that utilize the land release process. Participating organisations can include humanitarian, government authority and commercial operator organisations that are currently addressing contamination generated by recent conflicts in the region. The main focus of the course will be to enhance skills required for identifying, gathering and recording evidence of IED contamination.
The participant shall be endorsed by his / her organisation, self-nominations are not accepted.
00Cost
The GICHD and LMAC will provide necessary administration and logistic support for all the participants. A support letter from the Directors of the programmes must be attached to the application, along with valid health insurance coverage in Lebanon for the period of stay, and a colour passport photograph.
GICHD will be covering the cost of the course. This includes accommodation within RSHDL-Hammana, meals, coffee breaks, classroom materials, cleaning, transfer to and from Beirut airport. GICHD will also be covering the cost of a day out on Sunday 31 March 2019. This day will not involve any periods of instruction. Those not wishing to take part in the day out within the local area may have the day off.

00Equipment Requirements
Each student is required to bring:
- GPS that your organisation uses in the field. If wishing to purchase a GPS, the Garmin 64S is quite popular within the mine action community
- Cable to connect GPS with computer
- Clip Board for drawing on A4 paper
- Field clothing including boots, hat and water bottle
- Materials for making sketch maps will be provided, however students are welcome to bring their own.
